Although most Chapter 11 bankruptcies are corporate bankruptcies, many Chapter 11s are filed by individuals, particularly in the Bay Area. The reason for that is that there are strict limits on the amount of debt in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, forcing many individuals to file under Chapter 11 instead.
